Henry II - King of England Disasters Biographies Famous People History Social Studies

Henry II was an English king who presided over an empire stretching from Scotland to the Pyrenees.  His life was not without considerable controversy.  He, and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, were the parents of Richard the Lion-Hearted and King John Lackland.  His disagreement with Thomas à Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, resulted in Becket's murder in 1170.

This image depicts the effigy on Henry II's grave.  He is entombed next to Eleanor at Fontevraud Abbey, France.
