Hevelius with His Sextant and Wife Elizabeth

Hevelius with His Sextant and Wife Elizabeth World History Astronomy Famous People Social Studies Aviation & Space Exploration STEM

One of Johannes Hevelius’ assistants was Elizabeth, his second wife. In this image, from the 17th century, we see Hevelius and Elizabeth with the astronomer’s great brass sextant.

With a six-foot radius, Hevelius’ instrument was closely modeled on Tycho Brahe's great triangular sextant (from the 16th-century).
