Hideki Tojo was a General of the Japanese Imperial Army and the Prime Minister of Japan (October 17, 1941 - July 22, 1944) during most of World War II.
Militaristic in his approach toward other countries, he had approved Admiral Yamamoto's attack-plan for Pearl Harbor and opposed surrender after the U.S. bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Tojo was tried for (and convicted of) war crimes and was executed on December 23, 1948. He had earlier tried to commit suicide but was revived, then treated, by an American medical team.
This image depicts Tojo in an undated photo. He was 63 years old on the day he was hanged in Tokyo.
