Hiroshima - Radiation Sickness

Photograph of an eleven year old girl with Radiation Sickness-a victim of the Hiroshima bombing

The young girl in this image was 11 years old when the Hiroshima bomb exploded.  Inside a wooden house, about 2 kilometers from the hypocenter, she initially had no visible injuries.

About a week after the bombing, she began to feel ill and lost her hair.

People who were closer to the hypocenter - within 1 kilometer - also developed these symptoms.  Many of those victims ultimately died of radiation sickness even though they had survived the initial blast.
