Hoplon

Greek hoplites were infantrymen who fought their battles in tightly packed formations.  They took their name ("hoplite") from the "hoplon," a shield which they carried on their left arm.

This image depicts the cover of Hoplon: Wargame Rules for the Pre-Firearm Era, by Nicholas A. Protonoarios.  It discusss both the hoplon and how it was used during ancient times.
