How Do We Know When It’s Best to Fight or Surrender?

Other adversaries, who were threatened by the Persians, tended to give-up before a major battle in order to spare lives. The trade-off, however, guaranteed that the surrendering side would become subjects of the Persian ruler, with no chance of freedom.

Leonidas and his Spartans, however, refused to give-up the fight (or give-in to Xerxes), even if it meant losing their lives.

When is it “worth it” to fight—and—when is it “worth it” to surrender?

Is it ever "worth it" to surrender? Under what circumstances?
