Hubble Telescope - Vision Repair

When Hubble - the orbiting space telescope - was built, its creators inadvertently gave it distorted vision. Learn how astronauts “gave it glasses” during STS-61, a mission flown by the space shuttle Endeavor and its crew.

This video clip (from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory) explains the problem, examines its cure, features historical footage and includes interviews with project managers (at the space center) and astronauts (who installed new equipment during a space walk).

The two new devices, which fixed Hubble's vision, were the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 and the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement.

When the Hubble team first saw the results of the repair, they were ecstatic.  The orbiting space telescope now had clearer vision than anyone could have ever hoped for.
