Huck Finn - Learning about Moses and the

The Widow Douglas takes Huck Finn into her home and treats him as her son. She reads to him and wants to help him vastly improve his ability to learn (and to read).

This image, by E.W. Kemble, appears in the first chapter of the first edition of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It illustrates these words of the story:

After supper she got out her book and learned me about Moses and the Bulrushers, and I was in a sweat to find out all about him; but by and by she let it out that Moses had been dead a considerable long time; so then I didn't care no more about him, because I don't take no stock in dead people.
