Jackie Kennedy in Ft Worth

Jackie Kennedy in Ft Worth The Kennedys American History Social Studies

Jackie Kennedy looked radiant on the morning of November 22, 1963.  She joined her husband at the Hotel Texas, in Ft Worth, where they gathered for breakfast with state and local dignitaries.

She had been reluctant to leave her two children in Washington but did so because she believed the trip to Texas was an important event. America was having a national election, the following year, and the President wanted to shore-up relationships in Texas.

Mrs. Kennedy, everyone believed, would be immeasurably helpful on the trip.

In this black-and-white photo, we see Jackie wearing the pink-and-navy suit that she was wearing during the motorcade in Dallas, later that morning. It was the same suit she had on when her husband was shot, not long after that Ft Worth breakfast.

On the evening of November 23rd, after she arrived back in Washington with her husband's body, people suggested that she might want to change clothes. Her suit, after all, was blood-spattered since she was sitting right next to the President when he was fatally shot in the head.

Jackie refused to change clothes. She wanted everyone watching the news to see the impact of the President's assassination on her person.
