Jane Addams: Challenging a Nation - Preface

"Jane Addams", 1931, GLHF, Public Domain.

"To me it seems that to give happiness is a far nobler goal that to attain it: and that what we exist for is much more a matter of relations to others than a matter of individual progress: much more a matter of helping others to heaven than of getting there ourselves."

--Lewis Carroll

Everyone has heard of Mother Teresa, the Roman Catholic nun who devoted her entire life to helping the poor in India and around the world.  But you might never have heard of an American woman who accomplished the same thing more than one hundred years ago.  Her name was Jane Addams and her pioneering work as a social worker, sociologist, author, leader in women’s suffrage, and tireless efforts for world peace, won her awards and acclaim world-wide and made her a role model for women everywhere.

This is the inspiring story of how Jane Addams opened her heart and changed American society forever.
