Japanese Home Islands Invasion Map - Operation Downfall

Japanese Home Islands Invasion Map - Operation Downfall American History Famous Historical Events Tragedies and Triumphs World War II World History

If the Japanese Empire did not surrender, the Allies planned to invade Japan during August of 1945.  The mission was called "Operation Downfall."

This map depicts an overview of Operation Downfall, including the disposition of troops and where they would land.

Because Japan surrendered, all the men who had orders for "Operation Downfall" returned to their homes instead of invading Japan.

As it happened ... Japanese officials had correctly guessed where the Alllies would land their invasion troops.  As a result ... if Japan had not surrendered ... casualties on both sides would have been horrendous.
