Jean-Francois Millet - Angelus

Jean-Francois Millet - Angelus Tragedies and Triumphs Visual Arts Nineteenth Century Life

"Angelus" is a prayer practice which was recited in the morning, noon, and evening at the time Millet was at the height of his artistic skill.

Millet thought this painting, which he entitled Angelus, was a wonderful work of art.  It did not sell, however, until fourteen years after his death.

Created between 1857-1859, the work is now at the Musée d'Orsay, in Paris.
