Jesus Before Pilate

Jesus Before Pilate Trials Visual Arts World History Crimes and Criminals

Duccio di Buoninsegna - usually referenced by just his first name - was a famous painter from Siena (located in today's Tuscany).

Born in the 13th century, sometime between 1255 and 1260, he lived and worked in Siena when it was its own Republic.

Duccio created this tempera-on-wood between 1308 and 1311.  It is entitled "Pilate's First Interrogation of Christ" and measures 49 x 57 cm (19.3 x 22.4 inches).

Today it is maintained by the Museo dell'Opera metropolitana del Duomo in Siena, Italy.
