This portrait depicts the famous Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687), a scientist and astronomer who principally worked in the city of Danzig, Germany (now known as Gdansk, Poland).

In 1679, the Hevelius family endured a terrible tragedy when a fire destroyed all of Johannes' instruments, his workshop and most of his records.  Fortunately, the star catalog—on which he had worked so hard, for so long—was saved from the fire's ruinous path.

Including more than 1500 stars, the work was published (circa 1690) after Helevius' death.

Daniel Schultz created this painting of Hevelius during the late 17th century.
