Troops loyal to Ivan IV began their conquest of Kazan with a siege, in 1552.  About 150,000 troops were involved on behalf of the Tsar. 

Fighting ended badly for both Kazan and the Khanate of Kazan.  It is estimated that as many as 190,000 people were killed; in addition, thousands more were wounded or displaced.
