Khujand, currently the second-largest city of Tajikistan, is also the capital of a Tajik province known today as Sughd.

Historians believe that Alexander the Great built a Macdeonian settlement in the area, around 329 BC, calling it Alexandria Eschate (“Alexandria the Furthest”).

Khujand dates back around 2,500 years (making it one of the oldest cities in Central Asia).

Located on the Syr Darya River, at the mouth of the Fergana Valley, it became an important town along the northern “Silk Road.”

As a cultural hub, Khujand was home to Persian poets and scientists.
