King Charles I

King Charles I Famous People Government History Law and Politics Social Studies

Charles I was King of Britain until he was beheaded on January 30, 1649.  Although Oliver Cromwell ruled, as Lord Protector, the monarchy was restored when Charles' son, Charles II, became King of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1630.

Since Charles II died without legitimate children, in 1685, another son of Charles I - James (designated as the VII in Scotland and the II in England and Ireland) - took the throne at the death of his brother and ruled until his own death in 1701.
