This image depicts Kit Carson, a trapper and mountain man, who also served as a guide in the western United States.

Then ... the man who had once befriended the Navajo people was involved with a major tragedy.

He was directed, by the government, to uproot thousands of members of the Navajo Nation and, in 1864, force them to make "The Long Walk" to Bosque Redondo, a desolate land in what is now New Mexico.

Many Navajo, including elderly people and small children, died on the way.
