Krishna Teaches Arjuna on the Battlefield

Refusing to fight a war against people he knows, Arjuna orders his charioteer to drive him off the battlefield. He doesn't know that his charioteer is Krishna (the avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu).

Krishna tells Arjuna why he cannot leave but must fight the battle he desperately longs to avoid.

The scene is based on a Hindu Scripture known as the Bhagavad-Gita. The illustration depicts a house painting located in a Bishnupur (West Bengal, India) home.
