Kwajalein - Execution Island

Kwajalein - Execution Island American History Biographies Tragedies and Triumphs World War II Geography

Surviving a 2,000-mile drift in the Pacific Ocean, Louis Zamperini and Russell Allen Phillips ("Phil") reached the Marshall Islands.  Initially taken captive on Wotje, the men were treated well.  Then they were sent to another place in the Marshalls - an atoll called Kwajalein.  Their specific destination was Kwajalein Island.

Allied prisoners of war, who had the misfortune to reach Kwajalein, were usually killed.  That is the reason it was known as "Execution Island."
