General Douglas MacArthur had promised his men that he would return to the Philippines at the head of a liberation force.  It took many years, however, before that promise was realized.

This image depicts ships of the U.S. fleet moving closing to landing at the Philippines.  The U.S. National  Archives has described this photo:
