Charles Cornwallis - also known as Lord Cornwallis and/or the First Marquis of Cornwallis (1738-1805) - was a British Army general who was sent to Ireland after the end of the American Revolutionary War.

This image of a portrait, by John Singleton Copley (1738-1815), depicts how Cornwallis appeared, circa 1795.

In 1798 he was very involved with the charges brought against the Irish patriot Wolfe Tone.
