Lyndon Baines Johnson Takes the Oath of Office

Lyndon Baines Johnson (also known as LBJ) is sworn-in as America's thirty-sixth President aboard Air Force One. This event happened on November 22, 1963—a few hours after President Kennedy's assassination.

Sarah T. Hughes—an Article III Judge from the federal district court located in Dallas—administered the oath.

Soon after LBJ took the oath of office, the presidential party left Dallas and returned to Washington, D.C.

When she left the plane, upon her return, Mrs. Kennedy was still wearing her blood-stained suit.
