Mandela - Destroying Pass Book, 1952 Visual Arts Biographies Censorship Civil Rights Social Studies Tragedies and Triumphs

Apartheid-era laws required black South Africans to carry a pass book.  It identified their race and where they lived.  Anyone required to have a pass book was forbidden to travel to another area of the country without it.

In this 1952 photo, Nelson Mandela protests the law by burning his pass book.
