On the 27th of April, 1994, all South Africans were allowed to vote for their national leaders.  Nelson Mandela became the country's president after that historic event.

In this photo, Mandela is seen casting his own ballot.  It was the first time that he, and all other black South Africans, were allowed to participate in a national election.
