Marie Antoinette - Death Mask

Marie Antoinette - Death Mask Famous People Social Studies World History

Madame Tussaud was a genius at creating wax figures of real people.  She created this death mask of the decapitated French queen, Marie Antoinette.

How did she do it?  This book, Madame Tussaud and the History of Waxworks (by Pamela Pilbeam) provides the history.

As a member of the Hapsburg (Habsburg) family, Marie Antoinette shared a facial feature which other members of her family also had.  In most of her paintings, artists did not capture her "dropped lip."  In creating the death mask, however, Madame Tussaud did her best to be accurate.
