Nantucket as the Oil Capital of the World

At the height of its years as the oil capital of the world, Nantucket would have had at least a million barrels of whale oil pass through its harbor. That oil, in turn, would have been shipped to countries across the globe.

In this image, which is maintained by Mystic Seaport museum, we see a typical scene near the Nantucket harbor as whaling vessels have offloaded the results of their lengthy whale-hunting voyages.
