New York City Tenement in 1863 - 12 Families Per Flat

Floor plan drawing of a New York City tenement in 1863 (during America's Civil War).  As the image depicts, many people were crowded into small living spaces in NYC during this time frame.  

In this instance, "Twelve Families on Each Flat" lived near each other. Most of these individuals were immigrants or members of immigrant families.
