Hitler thought the German people needed lebensraum - more living space - so he dispatched his troops to Poland to invade and occupy land which belonged to others.

This map depicts how the Third Reich expanded, into Poland, after 1938.  (Hitler's invasion of Poland began on September 1, 1939.)
