Owen Chase during His Youth

Owen Chase was an officer aboard the whaleship Essex when it left Nantucket in August of 1819. This image, by an unknown artist, depicts Chase during his youth.

Chase—whom Nantucket whalers would describe as a "fishy" man, meaning an experienced, self-confident person capable of commanding a whaleship—did not always agree with George Pollard, captain of the Essex, with whom Chase served as First Mate.
