Peshtigo Fire - Illustration Depicting Flight to the River

Peshtigo Fire - Illustration Depicting Flight to the River American History Social Studies STEM Tragedies and Triumphs Nineteenth Century Life Disasters

As Peshtigo became an inferno, made worse by a wind-driven firestorm, people began to flee toward the Peshtigo River.  It was one of the only places where they felt they could survive.

Father Peter Pernin tells the story in his eyewitness account.  Panic-stricken people attempted to flee by rushing down Oconto Avenue - imagined in this scene by Mel Kishner.
