Peter the Great in The Netherlands

Peter the Great, the famous Russian Tsar, wanted to make his country strong.  He wanted a Navy, but his people did not have skills as shipbuilders.

To correct that problem, the Tsar traveled to The Netherlands, a country of seafaring people.  He worked with master shipbuilders, in places like Rotterdam, so he could understand firsthand how to build the best seagoing vessels.

This image—of a French-language trading card—depicts an artist's interpretation of Peter the Great working with a master shipbuilder in the Dutch town of Rotterdam.  It also depicts the Tsar's signature, in Russian.
