Petition for Universal Suffrage

In 1865, a group of women petitioned the United States Congress to do something about female suffrage.

This image depicts the original document which they signed.  It is maintained by the U.S. National Archives where curators have provided more information:

Petition of E. Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, Antoinette Brown Blackwell, and Others Asking for an Amendment of the Constitution that Shall Prohibit the Several States from Disfranchising Any of Their Citizens on the Ground of Sex, ca. 1865.

It would take many more decades, however, before American women were allowed to vote.
