Pharos Lighthouse Archeological Wonders Geography Social Studies World History Ancient Places and/or Civilizations

The Lighthouse of Alexandria was one of the Wonders of the Ancient World. It was built around 290 BC on the Island of Pharos at the city of Alexandria, Egypt.

Historians believe that the Pharos Lighthouse was the first lighthouse in the world.

Destroyed by earthquakes in the 14th century, Alexandria’s famous landmark was around 130 meters high. It helped to safely guide ships into the harbor of the city named after Alexander the Great.

This image, depicting how the Pharos Lighthouse may have appeared, was reportedly created by Professor H. Thiersch, around 1909.
