Philip of Spain

Philip of Spain Legends and Legendary People Visual Arts World History Social Studies

Image of a portrait called Portrait of Philip II of Spain, by Titian in 1551.  The original painting is maintained by the Prado Museum, Madrid.

History tells us that Mary I, daughter of Henry VIII, received this portrait as a gift while she was considering whether to marry Philip.  At the time she received the painting, she had not met her future husband.

In fact, Mary personally met Philip just two days before the couple married at Winchester Cathedral on the 25th of July, 1554.  The marriage made Philip "King of England" for as long as his wife lived.

Because her new husband could not speak English, Mary had to find a different way to communicate with him.  They used a mixture of Spanish, French and Latin as their own personal language.
