Image of the island of Corregidor.  This small island, south of Luzon Island (in the Philippines) was the place where about 2,000 refugees - fleeing the Japanese on the Bataan Peninsula - swam to what they thought would be a safe place.

Surviving shark-infested waters - and Japanese bullets intending to kill the swimmers before they reached Corregidor - the people who "made it" to this island were at a place which was also forced to surrender, to Japan, the following month.
