I have seen wicked men and fools,
a great many of both;
and I believe they both get paid in the end;

Chapter 14 in Kidnapped
by Robert Louis Stevenson

It was the 17th century. Port Royal, a Jamaican seaport, was the most economically important English-speaking town in the Western Hemisphere.
