Edgar Allan Poe was employed as a critic for Southern Literary Messenger in the mid-1830s.

The forward building, in this 1902 photograph, depicts the office where he worked.  The back building depicts the office where his foster-father, John Allan, worked.  (Allan was a senior partner at Allan & Ellis, tobacconists, at the time.)

When this photograph was taken, in 1902, Poe's office building was occupied by a watch shop.
