Image of a painting called The Apparition of the Virgin to Pope Calixtus III, by Sano di Pietro in 1456.

There is a legend about this Pope and his reaction to Halley’s Comet. The story takes place in the year this painting was created.

By the 15th century, Halley's Comet had become so closely associated with disasters that Calixtus III excommunicated its apparition in 1456. Whether the story is actually true is still a matter of debate, but it wasn't (and isn't) just Halley's Comet that was (and is) associated with omens and disasters.
