Portrait of Peter the Great

Portrait of Peter the Great Geography Visual Arts

Peter the Great, also known as Peter I, was the Tsar of Russia between 1682 and 1725.  Beginning with a Tsardom, he ended with an Empire (following his many conquests).

The impact of Peter's rule is still felt today, in many ways, including the city of St. Petersburg which he envisioned in the early 18th century.  His ideas helped to change Russia, including the introduction of a Navy.

One historian, James Cracraft, suggests that Peter's reforms were so significant they amount to a cultural revolution.  (See his work, The Revolution of Peter the Great, published by Harvard University Press in 2003).
