On the 9th of August, 1588, the Queen made a speech to her troops at West Tilbury Camp.  The country was in a difficult position, with the Spanish Armada delivering Spanish troops who could invade, then conquer, Britain.

Dressed differently from the way she appears in this image, she urged all those who were fighting for Britain to do their best.  She told them that although she would not lead them in battle (as she would do if she were a king), they would be victorious over Spain:

I have the heart and stomach of a king ...We shall shortly have a famous victory...
