R-12 / SS-4 Soviet Missile

R-12 / SS-4 Soviet Missile

The missile depicted in this photo, taken in Moscow's Red Square, is the R-12.

Referred to by NATO as the SS-4, this medium-range ballistic missile was at the heart of the Cuban Missile Crisis.  The Soviet Union sent many of these to be installed at launch sites, on the island of Cuba, in the fall of 1962.
