The character trait of Respect is defined as having a high regard for authority, other people, one's self, and one's country. It means that you treat people as you would want to be treated yourself. It is understanding that all human beings have value.
Throughout history, many people questioned the fact that all people who not being equally respected. Different ethnic groups, women, and other opposed segment of society often fought for the respect they knew they deserved.
One such individual was Susan B. Anthony who fought for women's right to vote in the United States. She felt that women were disrespected in many ways--but none more apparent than being denied the right to vote. She can read about her fight for women here: Susan B. Anthony
