Exhausted soldiers had little time for rest during the Normandy invasion.  If they were able, they would stop for a short time, wherever they could.

This artist's rendering, part of the U.S. Navy's art gallery, depicts a resting soldier.  Curators of the Navy’s art gallery describe it as follows:

Soldier Resting in Verville-Sur-Mer, by Alexander P. Russo.

The ultimate fighting machine, a soldier and his rifle, presents a symbolic scene of tragic meditation and the melancholy of war.
