Reverdy Johnson - Lawyer for Mary Surratt Crimes and Criminals American History Famous Historical Events Social Studies Trials Nineteenth Century Life

Reverdy Johnson was initially Mary Surratt's lead lawyer at the conspiracy trial.  He later turned over most of the responsibilities to two young lawyers:  Frederick Aiken (age 28) and John W. Clampitt (age 25).

Johnson personally argued that the Military Commission was neither legal nor the correct process to try his client.  The tribunal disagreed.
