Reza Khan was an Iranian Cossack soldier who was born in the village of Alasht (in the province of Mazandaran, near the Caspian Sea) on the 18th of March, 1878.  He came to power, initially as "Sardar Sepah" (commander of the army) in a 1921 coup, then as joint commander / minister of war, then as Shah (in 1925).

We can learn more about him from The Life and Times of the Shah, by Gholam Reza Afkhami (published by University of California Press).
