This image depicts the archaeological wonders at Persepolis, the great Persian city - situated in today’s Iran - which Darius I begin to build, circa 512 B.C.
Among its limestone palaces, and red-cedar ceilings, were walls covered with silk. Stones, in the city, were laid without mortar and were joined by iron bolts.
The town was massively damaged by the troops of Alexander the Great, around 331 B.C.
