Sanctuary Dedicated to Hera at Altis Geography Visual Arts Ancient Places and/or Civilizations

Altis, the sacred grove near Olympia, was a sanctuary to ancient Greeks.

Today it is the site of many ruined masterpieces of the ancient world including temples to the Greek gods and buildings created for the ancient Olympic games.  Those games were held every four years, beginning circa 776 B.C.

This image depicts ruins at the temple of Hera.  The ancient Greeks believed that Hera was the wife of their chief god, Zeus.
