Image of a painting - called Aelle's Saxons invade at Cymensore, by Pat Nicolle - depicts invading Saxons as they land at Cymensore (circa 477).

The chroniclers tell us what happened after the invaders arrived:

Aelle [a Saxon] came to Britain with his three sons ... in three keels at the place called Cymensore [in southwestern Sussex] and there they slew many Britons and drove some to flight in the wood that is called Andredsley [in the northern part of Sussex].

This image was published in a children’s magazine called Look and Learn during 1978.  The series was called “After the Legions Left.”
