Saxon Raiders Reach the Shores of Britain

Saxon Raiders Reach the Shores of Britain Legends and Legendary People Disasters World History Famous Historical Events

Before Rome's legions left the Empire's province of Britannia—the country we know today as Britain—Saxon raiders were already terrorizing the local population.

This image, by W. P. Caton Woodville, gives us an artist's interpretation of such a raid.  It was included in Hutchinson's Story of the British Nation with this caption and description

Saxon Raiders

Before the Saxons came as settlers they sailed up and down the North Sea and into the Channel, dreaded pirates, who would swoop down on some unprotected coast village, pillage the churches and houses and arry off the women and children as slaves.

Burning villages would mark the line of their retreat.

The Romans appointed a "Count of the Saxon Shore" to deal with them.

When Rome's legions left for good—in 410—Britain experienced a power vacuum.  Without the power of Rome to protect the local population, the people were even more vulnerable.
